Rumors about Baidu buying a stake in UCWeb have gone back many months, but the news the two are in formal talks comes just a month after UCWeb Chief Executive Yu Yongfu told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview that his company wasn't entertaining any buyout offers.

UCWeb's apparent about face would allow a partial exit for the start up amid a weak global economy, and also give Baidu a new and already successful application through which it could drive traffic to its mobile search site and other offerings like its application store.

Baidu is in the middle of a push to expand its presence in the burgeoning and potentially disruptive Chinese mobile market. According to a Baidu report released in May, 28.9% of visits to Baidu's mobile search website came from UCWeb, giving it the largest market share of all mobile browsers in China.
